We all know you love getting your favourite treatments done. But then you fall pregnant and don’t know what treatments are safe while you’re pregnant. We give you the run down in this post
Skin care:
First of all, retinol is a big no no whilst pregnant. Also called Vitamin A, retinal or isotretinoin. Which is sometimes hard to hear since its so good at treating fine lines, wrinkles, and skin texture. Unfortunately retinol during pregnancy has been linked to interference with fetal development. But don’t fret, a great substitute is bakuchiol. Its an extract from a babchi plant and benefits such as fine line and wrinkle improvement, skin strengthening and improvement of enlarged pores. It helps to even out skin tone and speed up skin cell regeneration. So all in all, keeps you young and youthful looking while you’re pregnant and breastfeeding
Salicylic acids are also a no go in high concentrations. So great alternatives glycolic acids, mandelic acids, lactic acid for dead skin cells, PHA which is gentler for all the sensitive skin gals
Laser hair removal is contraindicated in the first trimester. For second and third trimesters, its best to talk to your GP about continuation of your treatments whilst pregnant. Many clinics will require a GP letter of approval for treatment
Pigmentation affects 50% of women during pregnancy due to the increased estrogen (did you know that the amount of estrogen produced during one pregnancy is more than a woman will produce in her entire life while not pregnant). Vitamin C and SPF daily can help to powerfully fight against those free radicals and keep your skin brightened and fight against sun damage
Hyaluronic acid is a great product for hydration. Some molecules are too big to pass through the skins layer so we recommend a triple weight hyaluronic acid. HA holds 1000x its weight in water, so its a great way to stay hydrated. Unfortunately that beautiful little baby uses a significant amount of your water and hydration, so this can be a great way to keep your skin hydrated
Of course you’ll need to lock in that hydration with a barrier. Ceramides help improve the barrier of your skin through improving the essential fatty acid component in your skin, with a Vitamin B5 barrier cream.
Lucky last for skincare, of course theres Niacinamide or Vitamin B3 which is the holy grail for nearly everything. It improves your skin barrier, redness, skin texture, pores, regulates oil, protects against oxidative exposure, and improved fine lines and wrinkles. A great all rounder!
Injectables:
We love seeing your beautiful faces and improving confidence and self esteem! But unfortunately we can’t so any dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle, or fat dissolving whilst pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because the treatments haven’t been well studied on how it affects babies through the placenta or breastmilk. Your precious little one is precious to us too and we’d prefer to not risk anything!
If your still wanting a little something whilst pregnant or breastfeeding, skin needling can be an option. This is because skin needling is a controlled wound and stimulates the bodys natural healing process.
Skin needling can be good for:
– Acne scarring
– body scarring to break down the thick fibres (unfortunately you cant get it on keloid scars)
– Fine lines
– Loose skin
– Melasma
– Pigmentation (general pigmentation or freckles)
– Enlarged pores
– Skin tone and texture
– Product absorption
We hope that this little guide has given you some insight into what products and treatments you can still have whilst growing your bub!
